It means “the hidden.”
It was once an arcane pursuit
to find knowledge outside the
parameters of the purely physical and connect to hidden powers through ritual. In modern times it became an umbrella term for any  unexplained phenomenon. The erudite nature of the pursuit  has been obscured by the carnival called “paranormal.” But is there a hidden world?
